I savored my first French Cruller in the 90s, back when Dunkin Donuts baked their offerings fresh in house. It was a Saturday morning delicacy. A sweet childhood memory. I looked it up and apparently the donut chain discontinued their cruller in 2003, claiming that "the hand-shaped rectangular treats were too labor intensive, and couldn't be simulated with new machines for mixing doughnut batter". I now live in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and right over the bridge in the sweet little downtown of Kittery, Maine there is a lovely cafe. At Lil’s you will find the most amazing French cruller that will ever pass your lips, especially if you are lucky enough to arrive within minutes of them being taken from the oven. Airy, soft and delicate, lightly crisp on the outside, and the glaze that melts into every nook and cranny. Confection Purrfection.
