Inspired by late bloomers.

I've had moderate success growing dahlias in my garden over the years. A few years ago a friend shared some tubers with me, I planted them throughout multiple beds and they (mostly) thrived. I diligently dug them up every fall and tucked them away in our basement to hibernate throughout the winter. Until we had our daughter. This task (and so many others) became buried by more pressing to-dos. This year I planted one very large tuber with grande promises of showy pink blooms. I waited all summer and nothing. Finally, long after most of the other flowers had come and gone (and I had forgotten all about it) a splash of color caught my eye as I looked out the window while sipping my morning cappuccino. Upon closer inspection it was a splendid pink dahlia. A magical late bloomer. Note to self: dig up and store.
